We hit the thrift shops looking for spoon rings.
No matter their tarnish, we had a home for them.
Your favorite accessory.
You wore yours on your thumb,
I wore mine on my ring finger.
Years later I’d learn their lore—
once made of silver,
spoon rings were said to be crafted
by servants of well-off families
to give their brides as wedding rings.
The problem was the silver bore
the family’s emblem.
They were caught for thieving,
sentenced to death or slavery.
Haunted jewelry.
It had an upswing in the ’60s and ’70s.
I wonder how many of those rings we found
were authentic—
and came with ghosts.

Creepy… great premise for a story fiction or nonfiction.

Thank you! Coming from you, who writes so well of the creepy and unsettling, that’s a high compliment. I hadn’t thought of that. It would make for a great story, fiction or non.
