Moonlit Rebellion

The full moon hung lower than usual—
vibrant cool blues, white glow, silver pits.

I convinced my sister we should sneak down
to the river and skinny dip.

We slipped out the window,
towels tossed onto the grass.

Ran through the backyard,
chattering excitedly as we followed
the narrow path down to the river.

At the water’s edge,
the floodlight snapped on—
scaring us to death.
Motion sensor, nothing more.
We scanned the area with wide eyes and listening ears.
Nothing moved.
Nothing came.

Quickly we stripped
and ran into the water,
still warm from a long summer’s reach into autumn.

Black pools we hid beneath, unseen,
but the moon kissed our smiling faces.

We swam in sacred rebellion—
skin tingling, hearts wild,
the night holding us in its secret blessing.

Back in our room,
we fell fast asleep,
knowing we’d lived.

  1. Maybe there’s something in the air or just me, but after I read this and went outside to gaze at the sky. I only saw stars and no moon. Where is the moon? According to the Stellarium app, the moon was below the horizon, a waxing gibbous moon. Then I remembered when I skinny dipped in front of my friends under the night sky, embarrassing myself. The night sky always forgives, and friends are always there. Thank you for being my friend. You are my moonlight.
