The plastic bread bags
fit our feet perfectly
and slid inside our boots
to keep us dry.
We saved them all year long,
especially for wintertime
or rainy days
when our shoes were no match for nature.
We felt well armored,
our mother helping us one by one
into our Wonder Bread bags.
It mattered to us
because she took the task seriously—
protecting us from cold,
hoping for a little peace inside the house,
and we understood both.
If we stayed dry,
we could stay outside longer.
She’d have the house to herself
for at least an hour
if she wrapped us well
in clothes
and packaging.
A mutual goal between us.

Love it. I wore the plastic bread bags on my shoes for snowy weather as well as a child. Loving moms always think ahead with only the best intentions.
